A small foundation

careful partnerships.

Cafkralu Foundation began with a question that took two years of conversations to answer properly: who in our community is being overlooked, and what would it take to walk with them — not ahead of them?

01

We began in a borrowed meeting room in Parramatta, with a whiteboard, a kettle, and three people who refused to look away.

The Cafkralu Foundation was incorporated in late 2021 by a small group of social workers, educators, and community organisers who had spent the previous decade inside the systems they were trying to support — and who had seen, repeatedly, where those systems ended and the gaps began.

Our name comes from a word used by communities in the Pacific for the practice of looking after one another's children as if they were your own. It is not a metaphor we use lightly. It describes a kind of responsibility that does not switch off at five o'clock, and it describes the kind of work we have committed to doing — quietly, for as long as it takes.

In our first three years we operated almost entirely through in-kind support, partner venues, and a small circle of recurring donors. We did this on purpose. We wanted to build the organisation slowly enough to learn how it should be built.

Today we are a registered Australian charity with a growing team, a portfolio of community programs across greater Sydney, and a roadmap that points toward Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status in the coming year. We are still small. We intend to stay that way for as long as being small is what allows us to do the work properly.

02

Five years, told briefly. The dates we remember, the work that came out of them.

2021

Incorporation

Cafkralu Foundation is incorporated in New South Wales as a charitable institution. Initial seed funding from three founding donors covers operations for the first eighteen months.

2022

First programs

Two pilot programs launch in Western Sydney: an after-school reading initiative in partnership with three primary schools, and a women's financial counselling drop-in at a community health centre.

2023

First report

Our first annual report is published. We commit to publishing every report publicly, including what did not work, what we got wrong, and what we plan to change.

2024

Surry Hills office

We move into a small shared office in Surry Hills with two other community organisations. The team grows to five full-time and three part-time staff, plus a network of regular volunteers.

2025

Partner network

Our partner network grows to thirty-seven community organisations across greater Sydney. We begin work on the formal DGR application with the support of pro bono legal counsel.

2026

Where we are now

We are consolidating what works, expanding slowly into two new program areas, and preparing for the next stage of the organisation's development. More on this in our current annual report.

03

A small team with deep roots in the communities we serve. Most of us came to this work the long way — through years of practice, before we had a title for it.

IH
Founding Director

Imogen Hartley

Imogen has spent fifteen years working with communities across Western Sydney — first as a community development worker with a local council, then as a family support coordinator with a not-for-profit housing provider. She chairs the foundation’s governance committee and leads our long-term strategic planning.

She is a graduate of Western Sydney University and holds a Master of Social Work from the University of Melbourne. She lives in Marrickville with her partner and two children.

MD
Programs Director

Marcus Devlin

Marcus leads the design and delivery of our community programs. He came to the foundation after a decade running youth programs in out-of-home care, and before that, several years as a secondary school teacher in south-western Sydney.

He is responsible for our partner relationships on the ground — the actual, day-to-day work of making sure the foundation’s commitments translate into commitments that show up in people’s lives.

PC
Operations & Finance

Priya Chandrasekaran

Priya oversees the foundation’s operations, finance, and reporting. She is a qualified accountant who spent eight years in the not-for-profit practice of a mid-tier Sydney firm before joining Cafkralu in 2024.

She is responsible for the rigour behind our public reporting — making sure that what we say about our impact is something we can stand behind when it is read aloud at a community meeting.

TW
Community Partnerships

Tom Whitford

Tom works with the partner organisations, community groups, and grassroots networks that the foundation works with day to day. He joined in 2023 after several years coordinating volunteer programs for a regional community health service in the Hunter Valley.

His focus is on the relationships that do not show up in our reports — the slow, patient work of being a trustworthy partner before you ever need to ask anything of anyone.
